Jean Victorin, 66, Died After Sustaining Head Injury Following Staten Island Car Accident With Audi Q5 by South Avenue and Forest Avenue

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (January 30, 2026) – A pedestrian identified as Jean Victorin has tragically died in a Staten Island car accident on South Avenue near Forest Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 1:54 PM on January 4. Jean Victorin was walking when he was hit by a 22-year-old driver in an Audi Q5.
The force of the impact knocked the victim to the ground, leaving them with a major head injury. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
Jean Victorin was transported to the hospital to receive care. Unfortunately, his condition continued to deteriorate at the hospital, and he was later pronounced dead on January 11.
Prior to this collision, there were three injury crashes near the intersection of South Avenue and Forest Avenue over the last year. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Liability for Staten Island Pedestrian Accidents
Drivers must use reasonable care to avoid colliding with any pedestrians in the roadway. According to NY Veh & Traf L § 1146, “Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law to the contrary, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Drivers should take several actions to avoid colliding with any pedestrian.
- Rest: Drivers should be well-rested before heading out onto the roadway. Driving while fatigued can be just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated.
- Blind Spots: Drivers should check their blind spots before making any turns at intersections. Traffic intersections remain a major location where pedestrian accidents occur.
- Scanning: Drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them and take into consideration all of the potential pathways that pedestrians could appear from.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Even if a pedestrian was in the middle of a roadway, this does not relieve a driver of their duty of care to slow down and avoid hitting them. Depending on the unique circumstances of any collision, there could be several liable parties for a pedestrian accident. In particular, it matters whether or not a vehicle was being used for commercial purposes.
Steps to Take After Staten Island Pedestrian Accidents
Far too many people are killed or seriously injured every year in collisions across New York City. According to Injury Prevention, “Almost half (48%) of all MVC deaths in NYC were among pedestrians, compared with 12% nationally. Pedestrian death rates were highest among older age groups (⩾65 years). NYC’s older pedestrians were more likely than US older pedestrians to be killed at an intersection, during daytime and on weekdays.” Multiple steps should be taken after any pedestrian accident.
- Medical Treatment: Any person injured in a pedestrian accident should seek medical treatment. This is essential for helping to determine the extent of a person’s injuries.
- Surveillance Footage: Many pedestrian accidents are captured by surveillance cameras. This footage should be sought and examined.
- Accident Reconstruction: In some cases, accident reconstruction may need to be performed to help determine the circumstances leading up to a crash. Accident reconstruction is a discipline that uses math, physics, and vehicle positioning to help reveal how a collision occurred.
- Independent Review: The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident should seek an independent review of the collision with a team experienced in tort claims.
It can be hard to know what to do after any pedestrian accident. Victims are routinely left with severe injuries that impact their ability to live and work. Of course, many victims do not survive their injuries. The victims of pedestrian collisions are protected by a number of laws. They are able to pursue some measure of accountability with a civil action. This right extends to the family of any person who died. They are able to hold all liable parties accountable through a wrongful death claim.
