Why does Western New York see so many mesothelioma cases?

The reason there are so many cases in Western New York is because of the type of industry that was here back in the day.
Buffalo, it’s hard to tell at this point in time, but it was a very thriving and progressive city back in the day.

There were multiple steel mills around here, chemical plants all the way up through Niagara Falls, all the way up the Niagara River, power plants, oil refineries, you name it.

With all that industry comes a variety of asbestos products that were either used within the facilities or used as component parts of whatever they may be producing.

And with the long latency involved with the disease, which is 40 to 50 years, we’re starting to see those cases more now than 20 or 30 years ago, because there’s a certain amount of time that goes into it before it shows up.But that’s why there are so many in Western New York, one of the hottest spots for asbestos disease in the country.
