Valvoline Employee Sikander Samuel, of Schagticoke, Died After Being Pinned by Vehicle at Valvoline at 1682 U.S. Route 9

HALFMOON, NEW YORK (January 15, 2026) – A worker identified as Sikander Samuel has tragically died in a Halfmoon car accident at the Valvoline on 1682 U.S. Route 9.
Saratoga County officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:52 AM on Saturday morning. Two vehicles were waiting in a line at the Valvoline.
A 63-year-old driver waiting in line accelerated forward quickly and pinned Sikander Samuel against the vehicle ahead of him.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. He was transported by Clifton Park-Halfmoon EMS to Albany Medical Center with several injuries, including leg fractures and internal trauma. Despite life-saving measures, Sikander Samuel later died at the hospital.
The Valvoline where the accident took place was closed after the accident. A full investigation by OSHA remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Saratoga County Car Accidents
Drivers have an obligation to exercise caution to avoid colliding with vehicles or pedestrians ahead of them. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” There are many common causes of pedestrian collisions.
- Pedal Confusion: A number of pedestrian accidents are caused by pedal confusion. This occurs when the driver of a vehicle mistakes the gas pedal for the brakes.
- Speed: Drivers are substantially more likely to lose control of their vehicles at higher speeds. Even driving the speed limit could be dangerous, depending on the prevailing weather and road conditions.
- Fatigue: Fatigue can be just as dangerous as driver intoxication. Drivers are much more likely to make critical errors if they have not had enough sleep prior to getting on the roadway.
- Vehicle System Failures: In some situations, core components of a vehicle may malfunction and cause it to accelerate unintentionally. This has been a recurring problem in many different vehicles, including numerous Toyota and Lexus models.
There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian. The vast majority of these accidents involve drivers that are not paying attention to the road or otherwise failing to operate their vehicle in a safe manner. A worker injured in a car accident may be entitled to benefits through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no-fault insurance scheme designed to help workers.
Third-Party Liability for Halfmoon Car Accidents
Car accidents remain a leading cause of preventable injury and death for workers across New York and the United States. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “There were 54,750 nonfatal work-related transportation incidents involving one or more days away from work in 2020, down from 64,210 in 2019. The incidence rate also decreased, from 5.5 cases per 10,000 full-time workers in 2019 to 4.9 in 2020.” There could be numerous sources of third-party liability for any accident when a worker is injured.
- Drivers: Any driver that hits a worker could be liable for an accident through a civil claim. What matters is whether or not negligence played a role in the crash.
- Business: A third-party business could also be liable for a crash. This may be the case if the person that caused a worker to be injured was themselves working at the time of the collision.
- Vehicle Manufacturer: A vehicle manufacturer could also be liable for an accident if it was caused by some type of defect with the vehicle. Among other things, defects with a car could cause unintended acceleration.
- Property Owner: The entity that owned a property could be liable for a collision if they were separate from a worker’s employer.
In certain situations, a business owner could be directly liable for an employee’s injury under New York Labor Law § 200. According to the statute, all workplaces must be “constructed, equipped, arranged, operated and conducted as to provide reasonable and adequate protection to the lives, health and safety of all persons employed therein or lawfully frequenting such places.” Any worker injured in a car accident may be entitled to damages through a civil claim.
