Our client, a veteran in his sixties, with numerous comorbidities underwent a left adrenalectomy operation at a VA Hospital in spring of 2019. He suffered a three liter loss of blood during the operation arising from the removal of his left adrenal gland. He coded in the operating room shortly after the surgery ended. He was resuscitated and then transported to the ICU. He remained hospitalized until he passed away early 2020. His injuries following the adrenalectomy procedure included the need for two additional operations, ventilator dependency, a tracheostomy, lower torso skin breakdowns, and kidney failure which resulted in regular dialysis sessions. Pete Brady and his team, including paralegal Melissa Newhouse, worked through 14,000 pages of electronic medical records, consultations on multiple occasions with our medical expert, and conducting the depositions of seven VA physicians and two ICU nurses. Pete notes that his Melissa was indispensible in isolationg sections of our client’s voluminous chart which enabled us to zero in on physicians’ progress notes during these depositions. Our claim centered on alleged pre-operative medication administrastion and an alleged failure to competently perform the high-risk surgery. In the end, we were able to recover $3M for our client’s family.
