HORTONVILLE, NEW YORK (January 22, 2026) – At least 10 people were injured in an accident at the Villa Roma Resort in Callicoon after a staircase collapsed near a ski chalet.
Sullivan County officials are saying that the accident took place early Sunday evening. Authorities received reports of a structure collapse on the second floor at the Villa Roma Resort.
Paramedics were called to the popular ski resort in the Catskill Mountains to help all of the victims. A total of eight people were transported to a hospital in Callicoon.
Another two people were transported to the Garnet Health Medical Center Catskills in Harris. The circumstances leading up to the staircase collapse remain unknown.
However, investigators noted that it had recently snowed most of the day prior to the incident. A full investigation into the accident at the Callicoon ski resort remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Sullivan County Ski Resort Accidents
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. Consider, for example, Basso v Miller, 40 NY2d 233 (1976). A property owner’s obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition extends to all persons whose presence on a property is reasonably foreseeable. There are many ways that a property may have been in an unsafe condition at a ski resort.
- Structural Defects: A property owner may have allowed their property to have structural defects that caused certain areas to become unstable. This could include rotten or weakened beams that support loads.
- Improper Snow Management: A property owner may have allowed heavy snow accumulation at certain locations. This could’ve put undue stress on key support systems.
- Missing Safety Features: A property may have missing or broken safety features. This could include situations where stairways lack adequate load-bearing connections.
- Improper Construction: A property owner may have altered or repaired a stairway or other structure in a way that failed to meet building safety codes.
When it comes to determining liability for any accident at a premises in New York, the details really matter. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their property, they must take action. Failing to take action after becoming aware of a dangerous condition could form the basis of a negligence claim in the event anyone is injured.
Steps to Take After New York Ski Resort Accidents
Many people are injured in ski resort accidents every year. According to one study that focused on incidents at the Mammoth and June mountains (California) ski area, “A total of 24,340 injuries were reported for the 9 seasons studied, and total lift tickets sold numbered 9,201,486. The overall injury rate was 2.6 injuries per 1,000 skier days and increased slowly over the period studied.” Several steps should be taken after any accident at a ski resort.
- Medical Evaluation: Victims should seek a thorough medical evaluation. Many of the injuries associated with an accident will not be immediately obvious. It is important that the nature and extent of a person’s injuries are well documented.
- Eyewitnesses: All of the eyewitnesses to the accident should be interviewed while their memories are still fresh. They can help reveal what may have occurred in the lead-up to an accident.
- Police Report: The police report created after the accident should be carefully reviewed. These reports represent an officer’s initial impression of what may have happened. However, they can also contain inaccuracies and are far from thorough.
- Legal Consultation: Any person injured at a ski resort should carefully consider their legal options with experienced premises liability attorneys. An attorney can examine the unique facts of any case and take steps to hold all responsible parties accountable.
The vast majority of accidents involving any type of structure collapse are preventable. They tend to involve situations where property owners or building contractors acted negligently. Unfortunately, property owners will virtually never accept responsibility if someone is injured on their premises. This is why it’s so important that these accidents are thoroughly investigated by an outside party. Any person injured in a ski resort may be able to pursue damages through a bodily injury claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
