BRONX, NEW YORK (February 2, 2026) – A man identified as Ronald McAllister has tragically died in a Bronx gas explosion at a high-rise apartment on Bivona Street.

New York City officials are saying that the incident took place early Saturday. Firefighters were called to the scene after getting reports of a gas leak.

A subsequent explosion tore through multiple units on the 15th and 16th floors of the building. Several units sustained major structural damage.

Paramedics were also called to the scene to help all of the victims. In total, 15 people are believed to have been injured in the blast. One person was listed in critical condition, and five other people sustained serious injuries.

Sadly, one man identified as Ronald McAllister was critically injured after the ceiling collapsed on him. Despite life-saving measures at the hospital, he later died due to the severe nature of his injuries.

Authorities have since charged a 55-year-old homeless man with murder in connection to the death of Ronald McAllister. They are saying they believe that Samuel Calderon entered one of the units to take a woman’s stove so that he could use it to buy crack cocaine.

Residents of the building are blaming management for the fatal accident and accusing them of “neglect.” They have since told reporters that management did nothing after they reported the smell of gas a week prior to the deadly explosion.

A full investigation into the accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Bronx Gas Explosions

Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to use reasonable care in all circumstances to protect against foreseeable sources of harm. According to Basso v Miller, this must be done on behalf of all people at a property whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. Moreover, property owners must warn of dangerous defects on a property that the defendant “should know or suspect that the licensee will not discover himself after a reasonable inspection of the premises” (Velez v City of New York, 45 AD2d 887). There are many ways that a property owner may have acted negligently prior to a gas explosion.

  • Maintenance: A property owner may have failed to inspect or maintain gas lines within their building. Gas lines can easily be damaged by renovations and construction work.
  • Prior Complaints: A property owner may have failed to investigate reports of a gas leak. Property owners must investigate all reports of gas leaks or other hazardous conditions that pose a serious risk of harm to tenants.
  • Modifications: A property owner may have violated building codes by making improper modifications to key safety systems within their building. This could include situations where they performed renovations on gas lines.
  • Gas Shut Off: A property owner may have failed to shut off gas to units that were vacant or undergoing repairs. Allowing gas to continue to flow in these units can create a serious hazard.

There are several situations where a property owner could be liable for injuries on their premises. They may have created a hazardous condition that injured someone. It is also possible that they failed to remedy a dangerous condition after being given active or constructive notice of that condition. For example, tenants in a building may have informed management of a gas leak, but management failed to do anything about it. These types of incidents are actually much more common than many people realize. Property owners look to save money where they can and often avoid making needed repairs in their building.

Steps to Take After Bronx Gas Explosion Accidents

Many people are injured in accidents involving gas explosions each year. Sadly, the rate of the accidents has been increasing. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “The number of structure fires involving a flammable gas as the material of the item first ignited has increased over the past decade. The raw number of incidents as well as the percentage of these fires have increased compared to all structure fires.” Certain actions should be taken after any gas explosion in New York City.

  • Property Records: All property records related to the building should be sought and carefully reviewed. This should include all of the maintenance reports related to gas lines or appliances.
  • Medical Treatment: Any person injured in a gas explosion accident should seek medical treatment early on. Many of the injuries associated with this type of accident will not be immediately obvious.
  • Violations: It should be determined if the building where the explosion took place was compliant with all fire and safety codes. Many gas explosions occur at properties with numerous active safety complaints or code violations.
  • Legal Review: Victims of gas explosion accidents should carefully consider their options with a team experienced in premises liability law. They can subpoena necessary records and help identify all liable parties.

The vast majority of gas explosions are preventable. They tend to involve major safety lapses. This could include situations where key safety systems in a building are not being maintained. In far too many situations, property owners will become aware of a dangerous condition and still fail to act. It is important for victims of gas explosions to understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to hold the building owner that harmed them fully accountable through a civil action. This right extends to the family member of any person who died. They can seek some measure of justice and accountability through a wrongful death claim.
