CORTLAND, NEW YORK (January 12, 2026) – A 63-year-old woman identified as Kyong Searle has tragically died in a Cortland car accident at Main Street and Court Street.

Cortland County officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:30 PM on Thursday. Kyong Searle was lawfully crossing the street in a crosswalk when she was hit by an Amazon subcontractor in a minivan.

The driver was apparently making a left turn at the time of the collision. The victim was subsequently run over by the minivan after being hit. Authorities said that the driver failed to yield the right-of-way at the crosswalk.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help Kyong, the injured woman. Despite life-saving measures, Kyong Searle died due to the severe nature of her injuries. A full investigation into the Cortland Amazon car accident remains ongoing at this time.

The Cortland mayor, Scott Steve, has posted resources for the community in the wake of this tragic accident on his Facebook.

Liability for Cortland County Amazon Accidents

Every driver in New York must use caution to avoid collisions. They must be particularly cautious around pedestrians. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” There are many ways that a driver may have acted negligently prior to hitting a pedestrian.

  • Lookout: A driver may have failed to keep an adequate lookout for pedestrians that may be present. Common failures include looking down at a phone or not scanning intersections before turning.
  • Blind Spots: Drivers may overlook pedestrians if they fail to check their blind spots. As vehicles become larger, they tend to have larger blind spots that make it more difficult to see pedestrians.
  • Speeding: In many situations, drivers hit pedestrians because they are traveling at an unsafe speed given the prevailing road conditions. During periods of low visibility or inclement weather, drivers should slow down as required to avoid pedestrians.
  • Yielding: Drivers are required to understand and obey all traffic regulations related to pedestrians. In particular, drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and when turning left or right on a roadway. Failure to yield is a routine cause of pedestrian collisions.

If a driver makes a turn into the path of a pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. The person driving a vehicle in that situation could be held directly liable for the collision. Liability may also extend to any business or subcontractor that was operating at the time of the crash. Generally speaking, employers can be vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties. This could include situations where a delivery driver was dropping off packages.

Steps to Take After Cortland County Amazon Accidents

Amazon prides itself on delivering packages to customers as quickly and efficiently as possible. But the unfortunate truth is that this efficiency often comes at a steep price. According to CBS News, “In the past two years, at least 57 people have died in more than four dozen crashes involving federally regulated carriers shipping for Amazon, according to FMCSA data, though the data does not indicate who was at fault in these incidents.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any accident with an Amazon vehicle.

  • Medical Records: Medical records related to the collision should be sought and preserved. These records can actually offer a great deal of insight into how an accident took place.
  • Surveillance Footage: When an accident happens at a traffic intersection, there is a good chance that there will be surveillance footage of the collision. This footage could come from nearby businesses that have security cameras. Finding this footage is important.
  • Police Report: Another important step to take is to get a copy of the police report related to the collision. Police reports represent an officer’s first impression of what may have caused a collision. These reports can be useful when evaluating liability for the crash.
  • Independent Review: The family of any person who died in a collision with an Amazon truck should seek an independent review of the accident with a team experienced in tort claims. A legal team can determine whether or not Amazon or various other subcontractors could be legally responsible for a collision.

The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable. They tend to involve drivers that are failing to adequately scan the road ahead of them. Part of the problem is that many employers like Amazon will push their contractors to work as efficiently as possible. This can lead to them adopting dangerous driving habits. The family of any person who died in an Amazon truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a wrongful death claim.
