BOHEMIA, NEW YORK (January 11, 2026) – A 41-year-old father from Hauppague identified as Brian Yost was injured in a Bohemia semi-truck accident on the Veterans Memorial Highway.

Suffolk County officials are saying that the collision took place around 8:42 p.m. on Thursday. A semi-truck driver was attempting to back their vehicle into a loading dock.

However, he was blocking lanes of traffic while attempting to perform this maneuver. Brian Yost was driving a Chevrolet down the road when he was involved in a collision with the semi-truck.

First responders were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Brian Yost was airlifted to the Stony Brook University Hospital to receive treatment for major injuries.

The truck driver involved was reportedly not injured in the crash and remained at the scene. A full investigation into the Bohemia truck accident remains ongoing.

Liability for Bohemia Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial driver’s license. They must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. These drivers must be especially cautious while backing up their vehicle. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1211, “The driver of a vehicle shall not back the same unless such movement can be made with safety and without interfering with other traffic.” Any type of movement that blocks multiple lanes of traffic–particularly at night–is inherently dangerous and should be viewed with great scrutiny when assessing liability. There are multiple factors that could contribute to a truck accident.

  • Experience: Younger truck drivers with less experience are statistically more likely to violate traffic and safety regulations for operating a commercial truck. This subsequently makes them more likely to be involved in major collisions.
  • Training: A lack of proper training is another major factor that could contribute to a truck accident. Operating a commercial truck is not like operating a passenger vehicle. Trucks have large blind spots and a wide turning radius. Being able to maneuver them safely often requires many, many hours of extensive training.
  • Poor Visibility: Reduced visibility can easily contribute to a truck accident. Vehicles and pedestrians become more difficult to see at night and during periods of inclement weather. This is why it is so important for drivers to properly moderate their speed during these conditions.
  • Stress: Truck drivers are often pushed to complete their delivery routes as quickly as possible. This can lead to them becoming stressed and dangerously fatigued. In fact, the FMCSA reports that one in ten truck drivers involved in a fatal collision reported feeling under pressure from their carrier.

If a truck driver makes a dangerous turn onto a road or private business and enters into the path of another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. When a truck driver is negligent and causes a collision, liability for the crash could extend beyond any one driver. The company that they work for could also bear some level of responsibility. Generally speaking, employers are liable for the wrongful actions of their workers–insofar as they were working within the course and scope of their job duties.

Steps to Take After Suffolk County Truck Accidents

Far too many people are seriously injured or killed every year in accidents involving vehicles backing up. According to data from the National Safety Council, “twenty- five percent of vehicle accidents result from poor backing techniques. Backing accidents are the cause of 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year.” Victims of truck accidents should take certain measures to protect their health and legal rights.

  • Medical Evaluation: Any person injured in a truck accident should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with a collision will not be immediately obvious. They should continue to seek follow-up treatment until they are fully recovered.
  • Accident Report: The accident report related to the collision should be carefully reviewed. These reports can be an important piece of evidence when evaluating liability. But they can also contain errors and are not a replacement for a thorough investigation.
  • Evidence Preservation: Evidence related to the collision should be collected and properly preserved. This includes photos of the accident site. Another important piece of evidence is electronic records from a truck’s event data recorder (EDR).
  • Legal Review: Victims of truck accidents should seek the guidance of an experienced truck accident attorney. An attorney can evaluate all of the unique facts of your case at no cost and help identify all potentially liable parties. In particular, they can assess whether or not a truck driver violated any vehicle or traffic regulations.

Truck accidents tend to be highly preventable. Part of the problem is that truck drivers may begin to adopt unsafe driving habits to make their routes more efficient. In many cases, it is ordinary people that pay for these decisions with their bodies and lives. To make matters worse, truck companies will virtually never accept responsibility if they seriously injure someone. This is why it is so important for victims to carefully consider their legal options. Any person injured in a truck accident may be entitled to compensation to help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
